The light from his eyes brightened as the red orb of the sun bled onto the serrated horizon. The chill of death hung in the air suspended on a breath of winter. Not the clean scent of ice and snow but the damp, fetid odor of turned earth and it grated against his senses. Someone had died and not in old age’s peace. Violence had spilled blood somewhere close. Its wrongness assaulted his magical senses, shoving him into motion.
